A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in D-Link DIR-605L Wireless N300 Cloud Router firmware versions 1.12 and 1.13 via the getAuthCode() function. The flaw arises from unsafe usage of sprintf() when processing user-supplied CAPTCHA data via the FILECODE parameter in /goform/formLogin. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the device.

Detection & IOCsextracted from sources · hover to see the quote
- →Monitor HTTP POST requests to /goform/formLogin containing an oversized or anomalous FILECODE parameter, which is the attack vector for the stack-based buffer overflow via getAuthCode(). ↗
- →Flag unauthenticated remote requests targeting /goform/formLogin on D-Link DIR-605L devices running firmware 1.12 or 1.13, as exploitation requires no credentials. ↗
- →A public Metasploit module exists for this vulnerability (exploits/linux/http/dlink_dir605l_captcha_bof), meaning exploitation attempts may carry Metasploit-characteristic payloads or staging patterns. ↗
- ·Exploitation has only been confirmed on firmware versions 1.12 and 1.13; applicability to other firmware versions is unverified. ↗
- ·The Metasploit module was validated against an emulated environment for firmware 1.13; real-hardware behavior may differ slightly from emulation. ↗
