In the MMM::Agent::Helpers::Network::send_arp function in MySQL Multi-Master Replication Manager (MMM) mmm_agentd 2.2.1 (for Solaris), a specially crafted MMM protocol message can cause a shell command injection resulting in arbitrary command execution with the privileges of the mmm\_agentd process. An attacker that can initiate a TCP session with mmm\_agentd can trigger this vulnerability.

  • Target process: mmm_agentd daemon listening for TCP connections; exploit arrives as a specially crafted MMM protocol message over TCP that injects shell metacharacters into the send_arp function.
  • mmm_agentd commonly runs with root privileges and does not require authentication by default, making any TCP connection to it a potential attack vector.
  • Injection point is the MMM::Agent::Helpers::Network::send_arp function; monitor for unexpected child processes (e.g. shell) spawned by mmm_agentd.
  • ·Vulnerability is specific to the Solaris build of MMM 2.2.1 (send_arp code path); other OS builds may use a different ARP helper and may not be affected by this specific CVE.
  • ·No authentication is required by default; network-level access controls (firewall rules restricting TCP access to mmm_agentd port) are the primary mitigation until patching.
