The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to a global buffer over-read error because of an assumption made by code that runs for objcopy and strip, that SHT_REL/SHR_RELA sections are always named starting with a .rel/.rela prefix. Original advisory details:
It was discovered that GNU binutils contained a large number of security
issues. If a user or automated system were tricked into processing a
specially-crafted file, a remote attacker could cause GNU binutils to
crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary
code.
Instructions: In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
