Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, and Windows Server 2016 allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user, due to how the scripting engine handles objects in memory, aka "Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability". This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2018-0758, CVE-2018-0762, CVE-2018-0768, CVE-2018-0769, CVE-2018-0770, CVE-2018-0772, CVE-2018-0773, CVE-2018-0774, CVE-2018-0775, CVE-2018-0776, CVE-2018-0778, and CVE-2018-0781.

  • CVE-2018-0777 is a Chakra JIT out-of-bounds write triggered by a loop induction variable whose ValueInfo becomes inconsistent between prepass and optimization phases; look for JIT-compiled JavaScript with induction variables modified by a no-op add (e.g., i += 0) inside a conditional, followed by large-range array writes.
  • The vulnerability is in Microsoft Edge (HTML-based) scripting engine (Chakra); a web-based attack vector involves a specially crafted website delivered to the victim via Microsoft Edge.
  • The exploit marker value 2.3023e-320 used as the OOB write payload in the PoC can serve as a distinctive byte-level signature in JavaScript payloads targeting this vulnerability.
  • ·Exploit status at time of patch was 'Publicly Disclosed: No; Exploited: No' but rated 'Exploitation More Likely' for the latest software release; no older software release rating was provided.
  • ·A related CVE (CVE-2018-8137) was later found by adding an additional for-loop layer around the CVE-2018-0777 PoC, indicating the patched code area remained vulnerable to variant exploitation patterns.
