A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Windows Hyper-V on a host server fails to properly validate input from an authenticated user on a guest operating system. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker could run a specially crafted application on a guest operating system that could cause the Hyper-V host operating system to execute arbitrary code. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could execute arbitrary code on the host operating system. The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Hyper-V validates guest operating system user input.

Detection & IOCsextracted from sources · hover to see the quote

  • Exploitation vector is a specially crafted application run on a Hyper-V guest OS that triggers arbitrary code execution on the host OS — monitor for anomalous guest-to-host escape activity on Hyper-V systems.
  • Requires an authenticated user session on the guest OS — correlate with authenticated guest user activity preceding any host-level anomalies.
  • CVE-2019-0722 is one of three Hyper-V hypervisor escape RCEs patched in June 2019 Patch Tuesday (alongside CVE-2019-0620 and CVE-2019-0709) — treat all three as a cluster when hunting for Hyper-V escape attempts.
  • ·Microsoft assessed exploitation as 'Less Likely' for both latest and older software releases at time of disclosure, and no public exploit or in-the-wild exploitation was confirmed.
  • ·No public proof-of-concept or active exploitation was disclosed at patch time, limiting concrete IOC availability.
