This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to bypass authentication on affected installations of D-Link DIR-867, DIR-878, and DIR-882 routers with firmware 1.10B04. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the handling of HNAP login requests. The issue results from the lack of proper handling of empty passwords. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the router. Was ZDI-CAN-9471.

  • The vulnerability is triggered via HNAP login requests with empty passwords — monitor for HNAP login attempts (e.g., POST to /HNAP1/) with an empty or null password field from network-adjacent (LAN/WiFi) sources on affected D-Link DIR-867, DIR-878, and DIR-882 routers.
  • No authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability; any unauthenticated HNAP login request with an empty password from a network-adjacent attacker should be treated as suspicious and investigated.
  • ·Affected firmware version is 1.10B04 on D-Link DIR-867, DIR-878, and DIR-882 routers; exploitation requires network-adjacent positioning (LAN/WiFi range), not remote internet access.
