  • CVE-2021-27101 is exploited via a crafted Host header in an HTTP request to the document_root.html endpoint on Accellion FTA. Monitor HTTP requests to this endpoint for anomalous or SQL-injection-bearing Host header values.
  • Post-exploitation, look for the DEWMODE web shell dropped under /home/seos/courier/ on Accellion FTA servers as an indicator of successful CVE-2021-27101 exploitation.
  • Initial access in the Accellion FTA campaign was gained through CVE-2021-27101 (SQL injection), followed by DEWMODE web shell deployment for file browsing and exfiltration. Chain detection should cover both the SQLi entry point and subsequent web shell activity.
  • ·No public proof-of-concept exploit was available at the time of the Tenable blog publication; detection signatures based on exploit traffic patterns may need updating as PoCs emerge.
  • ·TTPs associated with DEWMODE and the Accellion breach have been widely publicized; threat actors may modify their tooling to evade detection rules built on known indicators.
