CVE-2021-3928 [MEDIUM] Vim vulnerabilities
Title: Vim vulnerabilities
Summary: Several security issues were fixed in Vim.
It was discovered that Vim incorrectly handled permissions on the .swp
file. A local attacker could possibly use this issue to obtain sensitive
information. This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM. (CVE-2017-17087)
It was discovered that Vim incorrectly handled restricted mode. A local
attacker could possibly use this issue to bypass restricted mode and
execute arbitrary commands. Note: This update only makes executing shell
commands more difficult. Restricted mode should not be considered a
complete security measure. This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM.

vim is vulnerable to Heap-based Buffer Overflow
Statement: This flaw is marked as Low Impact because it requires a user to run an untrusted/malicious Vim script using the `-s` option at the command line. Untrusted Vim scripts should never be run as they can already execute arbitrary shell commands. The security issue raised by this flaw would be no worse than what is already possible when running untrusted Vim scripts.
Vim as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 is not affected by this flaw. The flaw is out of support scope for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7.
Mitigation: Do not run untrusted vim scripts with -s {scriptin} as it is never safe to do so.

FAQ: Is Azure Linux the only Microsoft product that includes this open-source library and is therefore potentially affected by this vulnerability?
One of the main benefits to our customers who choose to use the Azure Linux distro is the commitment to keep it up to date with the most recent and most secure versions of the open source libraries with which the distro is composed. Microsoft is committed to transparency in this work which is why we began publishing CSAF/VEX in October 2025. See this blog post for more information. If impact to additional products is identified, we will update the CVE to reflect this.
