This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Netatalk. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the setfilparams function. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-15837.

  • The vulnerable function is `setfilparams` in Netatalk; monitor for exploitation attempts targeting this function via unauthenticated remote requests to the AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) service
  • No authentication is required to trigger the vulnerability; any unauthenticated connection to the Netatalk AFP service attempting to set file parameters should be treated as suspicious
  • Successful exploitation results in code execution as root; monitor for unexpected root-level process spawning from the Netatalk (afpd) daemon
  • ·Debian bullseye fix is available; ensure Netatalk is updated to 3.1.12~ds-8+deb11u1 or later on bullseye systems
  • ·Debian forky, sid, and trixie fix is available; ensure Netatalk is updated to 3.1.13~ds-1 or later
