A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, Administrator-level, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to have valid Administrator credentials on the affected device. This vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the underlying operating system as the root user.

Detection & IOCsextracted from sources · hover to see the quote

  • Vulnerability is triggered via crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 routers; monitor for anomalous or malformed HTTP requests targeting the management interface from authenticated administrator sessions.
  • Exploitation requires valid Administrator credentials; alert on unexpected administrator logins or privilege escalation attempts on affected Cisco Small Business router management interfaces.
  • Successful exploitation results in arbitrary code execution as root on the underlying OS; monitor for unexpected root-level process spawning from the web management daemon on affected devices.
  • Track Cisco Bug ID CSCwm48770 for patch and indicator updates related to this vulnerability across RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 router families.
  • ·Exploitation is limited to authenticated Administrator-level users only; this is not an unauthenticated attack vector, reducing but not eliminating risk.
  • ·The vulnerability class includes both stack-based (CWE-121) and heap-based (CWE-122) buffer overflows, suggesting multiple distinct memory corruption primitives may be present in the management interface input handling.
  • ·The advisory covers multiple vulnerabilities (RCE and DoS) under the same advisory identifier; CVE-2024-20519 specifically pertains to RCE, but defenders should review the full advisory for related DoS CVEs affecting the same devices.
