A vulnerability in the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 Routers could allow an authenticated, Administrator-level, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code as the root user. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to have valid Administrator credentials on the affected device. This vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied input in the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the underlying operating system as the root user.

Detection & IOCsextracted from sources · hover to see the quote

  • Vulnerability is triggered via crafted HTTP requests to the web-based management interface of Cisco Small Business RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 routers; monitor for anomalous or malformed HTTP requests targeting the management interface from authenticated administrator sessions.
  • Exploitation requires valid Administrator credentials; alert on unexpected administrator logins or logins from unusual source IPs preceding suspicious activity on affected Cisco Small Business router management interfaces.
  • Successful exploitation results in arbitrary code execution as root on the underlying OS; monitor for unexpected root-level process spawning from the web management daemon on affected devices.
  • Root cause is improper validation of user-supplied input (stack/heap buffer overflows, CWE-121/CWE-122); focus detection on oversized or malformed input fields in HTTP POST requests to the management interface.
  • ·Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold valid Administrator-level credentials on the affected device, limiting the attack surface to privileged accounts.
  • ·Affected devices are Cisco Small Business RV042, RV042G, RV320, and RV325 Routers only; scope detection and patching efforts accordingly.
  • ·This CVE is part of a broader advisory (cisco-sa-sb-rv04x_rv32x_vulns-yJ2OSDhV) covering multiple vulnerabilities (DoS and RCE) tracked under Bug ID CSCwm48770; ensure all related CVEs in the advisory are assessed together.
