  • CVE-2025-24990 is an untrusted pointer dereference in the Windows Agere Modem Driver (ltmdm64.sys) actively exploited in the wild to achieve elevation of privilege to administrator level. Presence of ltmdm64.sys on a system combined with privilege escalation activity should be treated as suspicious.
  • Exploitation does NOT require the Agere Modem to be actively in use — all supported Windows versions with the driver present are at risk. Hunt for ltmdm64.sys on endpoints regardless of modem hardware presence.
  • ·Microsoft's mitigation is complete driver removal — ltmdm64.sys is removed in the October 2025 cumulative update. Fax modem hardware dependent on this driver will cease to function after patching.
  • ·Microsoft has not publicly shared technical exploitation details, limiting the ability to build behaviour-based detections beyond driver presence and privilege escalation telemetry.
