CVE-2025-6818 [MEDIUM] CWE-119 hdf5: HDF5 Heap Overflow
hdf5: HDF5 Heap Overflow
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in HDF5 1.14.6. Affected is the function H5O__chunk_protect of the file /src/H5Ochunk.c. The manipulation leads to heap-based buffer overflow. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used.
A flaw was found in hdf5. The H5O__chunk_protect function in /src/H5Ochunk.c contains a heap-based buffer overflow resulting from improper memory handling. This flaw allows local attackers to trigger the overflow by manipulating a crafted file. This condition can lead to a denial of service.
Mitigation: Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use

FAQ: Is Azure Linux the only Microsoft product that includes this open-source library and is therefore potentially affected by this vulnerability?
One of the main benefits to our customers who choose to use the Azure Linux distro is the commitment to keep it up to date with the most recent and most secure versions of the open source libraries with which the distro is composed. Microsoft is committed to transparency in this work which is why we began publishing CSAF/VEX in October 2025. See this blog post for more information. If impact to additional products is identified, we will update the CVE to reflect this.
