CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the HCOMPRESS tile decoder that allows attackers to read past the compressed tile buffer via input_nnybble in fits_hdecompress.c. Attackers can supply a crafted FITS file with ZCMPTYPE HCOMPRESS_1 declaring oversized tile geometry to crash applications calling fits_read_pix or disclose limited heap memory.

CVE-2026-111125 [MEDIUM] CWE-125 cfitsio: cfitsio: Denial of Service via heap-based out-of-bounds read in HCOMPRESS tile decoder
cfitsio: cfitsio: Denial of Service via heap-based out-of-bounds read in HCOMPRESS tile decoder
A flaw was found in cfitsio. A heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the HCOMPRESS tile decompression logic allows an attacker who tricks a user or system into processing a crafted Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) file with oversized tile dimensions to read beyond allocated memory boundaries. This issue primarily leads to a Denial of Service (DoS) through an application crash and may also result in limited information disclosure from heap memory.
